Tail lock assy

Need to replace the tail lock an my 85 bird.
I know I can get a replacement from an auto parts store but it seems like there should be some type of extension from the lock mech to the latch assy? Is this correct. I dont have the origanal lock so i dont know.

I think the lock tumbler is connected by a cable to a mechanism that disengages the lock itself.

Yes the lock is connected to a cable that disengauges the actual lock. I found this out replacing my hatch pulldown motor.
