hey all,been gone for a couple years since I sold the GTA and the 91-Z..well,I am back after a few second gen builds..just picked up this 85 Iroc last night..it is a basket case right now..guy I bought it from took it apart to paint it and never painted it..so,my plan is just to re paint the original yellow and reassemble it..has window sticker so it is for sure a true Iroc and came with all options..this should be fun..first couple pics of the car on the uhaul trailer are from the guy I got it from..thats what it looked like when he got it..I have no idea why he took it all apart when he didn't plan on a color change but..It is my new jigsaw puzzle..lol

thanks guys..should be interesting..did some digging and found it has the 3;42 rear but is non posi and has g92...I thought g92 meant posi 3;42? I'm confused..it is definately the original rear axle,tube has 8ka stamped into it and no posi tag on the differential cover..That is all I have at the moment,haven't tried jacking it up yet to see if both wheels turn in the same direction or not..
seems like a somewhat rare car..first year model Iroc with all available options other than the rear wiper and overhead console..

 

G92 means performance rear axle, and the ratios vary. Mines a 3.45 limited slip (Posi). It should be on your SPID sticker in the glovebox.

 

yeah,maybe thats where I am confusing myself..I just assume that performance rear axle means limited slip(posi)..I just need to get the spid checked and lift the rear off the ground and see what I have I guess..

ya my 85 iroc has the 3.42 one legger also it was a lb9 car thought it would have a posi but nope

 

Mine was exactly the same way too. 3.42 1-legger LB9.

Very strange how they did that. I have a 2.73 with posi, can barely bark the tires from a dead stop.

thanks guys..yep,exactly what I have..3;42 one wheel wonder and lb9...took 2 days to get it off the trailer this weekend..bought it without even hearing it run..if thats any indication on what I paid for it..lol..bought a new battery and some gas Saturday morning..she wouldn't start..after a few hours of testing with a P.O.S.. volt meter I concluded that the distributor pick up coil and ignition module were both bad..replaced the radio interferance harness while I was in there since the plastic housing just crumbled in my hands..got it all back together Sunday morning..fired right up without skipping a beat..very pleased..drove around the neighborhood and tranny shifts nice and crisp and overdrive is functioning properly..one problem I do have however..the fuel pump is constantly running..turn the ignition on and just keeps going..doesn't shut off after priming..is this normal behavior for an 85?

 

Not much to update on other than collecting a few parts...first task is going to be rebuilding the door hinges..fenders are off and I think I will remove both doors just to make the task easier..I know,re hanging doors is going to be a pain but,not like I am new to it..I think having the doors up on the bench will be much easier grinding off the old pins on the uppers and replacing the detent rollers while I'm at.

 

Welcome back, and nice car!! Love those yellow IROC's. That is a dealer invoice you have there. Take the ship date and go back 1 or 2 days and that's when the car rolled off the line.

 

right,I remembered that after I first posted..invoice,not window sticker..I pulled the interior out so I could wash the carpet..it is filthy! Will try cleaning before I buy new..the original stuff looks in good shape just needs a serious bath with a pressure washer..lol

Not completely sure, but pretty sure the fuel pump has to shut off when the engine is not running after a few seconds. Safety deal in case of a wreck etc. Somebody might have hot wired it? I'm thinking there is a factory prime wire that's pretty handy for that.

 

well,here is a little update..interior is now completely gutted other than the dash which I will be masking off for paint..as well as shifter and e-brake lever..tried my luck at cleaning the rug and it turned out a lot better than it was but just not good enough so I will be installing new for sure..The floors looked great,just a couple of small surface rust spots so I wire wheeled the spots and sprayed the floors with some 3M bed liner..door hinges had a little slop in them so they are now rebuilt with new rollers and pins/bushings..next step will be getting some 2k epoxy primer on everything after cleaning,degreasing and sanding..

Yes,will be going back with the original yellow gold paint..gm number wa8740..going with base/clear from DuPont or Nason..

 

Wow! Didn't realize it had been so long since my last update..I am usually halfway done with a build after the amount of time since I got this one..haha...just have been super busy...I have been collecting parts..new abs headliner,window sweeps,new dash pad,stripe kit..and just last Friday I got my paint!(:
Now if I could just get some free time to get something done..

 

Well I managed to get one door sanded tonight..that's progress right? Haha

 

Probably my most hated part of rebuilding a car. Seems to never get done. Sure a solid, good looking third gen to have T-tops.

 

Woot woot!! Finally got some 2k primer on doors,hood,fenders and hatch panel..

Thanks 84...well I spent a big part of the day sanding all the little odds and ends..good lord what a chore painting a car piece by piece..let's just hope I can manage to put it back together without damaging anything..got about 70% of the car in color today so moving along pretty good! Well I have most of the shell ready for primer and hoping to get it done tomorrow evening..glad to be finally getting some work done to it..hate looking at the piles of parts all over the shop..

 

2k epoxy primer is on the rest of the body now!! Got 2 coats on it so looks like I will be laying color on her tomorrow morning! Yes!! Excited to get the rest of it painted and start my favorite part of this...the reassembly!! Well except for the part of hanging the doors..

And here we are..she is yellow again! Woohoo!! Now for the process of putting her all back together..I still have to remask the front bumper so I can paint the headlight pockets black..then find a windshield installer...then buff and decal set..

I've been watching this for a little bit now, but it looks great. Nothing as cool as a great paint job done in a garage instead of a shop.

 

Thats gonna be a nice one. One of the only cars I regret getting rid of was a Yellow 87 I picked up that needed restored.

Man..masking off headlight pockets was a tedious task..I think they turned out good..what ya think folks? Paint was still wet in the pics..it isn't as glossy as it appears..I also put a fresh coat on the t-top bar..

 

Well look what I found on my door step..some new acc carpet!! Sweet! Since I got it I had to give the seats a serious cleaning!! Posting before and after pics of seats so you can see how big of a difference there is..
