Speedometer doesn't work

The speedo in my 83 Trans Am doesn't work. The transmission WAS shot to hell,so I figured maybe the gears were trashed. Now the new tranny has known good gears in it so:
1) if speedo still doesn't work, what do I do?
2) how do I disconnect the speedo cable from the speedometer to remove the entire cluster?

It's a pita disconnecting the speedo cable. You have to lay under the dash and with a screw driver push the clip around the cable down and pull on either the cluster (if you have all the scews out) or pull on the cable. Then it should just come out. Took me about an hour to remove the whole cluster for the first time a couple weeks ago.

if you remove the dash pad...its so much easier to pull the gauge cluster
