tweaked fuel tank

The fuel tank in my car is sitting crooked. The neck is all the against the side of the little panel inside the gas door. Makes getting the gas cap on and off a challenge (my wife can't even do it). It has always been a little crooked, but it seems to be getting worse. I am afraid that it will break or crack the neck if it keeps going. Is there a way to pop it back straight without dropping the tank? Can I just jack up the rear end, take a couple 2x4s or something and rotate it in the straps? Any other ideas on how to get it stright?

Thanx in advance.

Re: tweaked fuel tank

Put a 2-3ft long prybar in the little gas fill hole and gently bend the neck to the correct position. You may have to remove the gas door and black plastic part to get enuff movement you'll need.
You can also loosen the tank strap bolts and gently pry the tank around a lil bit, sometimes they don't get put back in the exact same spot.

Re: tweaked fuel tank

take the black plastic trim out, and get either a prybar or a long piece of metal and gently bend it into position. the fuel necks on these cars are actually supposed to bend. there is such little room, the factory made the fuel neck pliable so that you had to bend the neck out of position to get the tank in, then once its in place, bend the neck into position. although, due to their design, the did have cracks in them. had to send my tank to a shop to get a crack soldered together again.

Re: tweaked fuel tank

Take off the plastic panel in the back of the wheel well, that's how I bent my neck straight again after taking the tank out.

Re: tweaked fuel tank

But if it's moving, getting worse alignment, then the neck is prob already cracked.
