highbeam switch, gas guage

The swith for my highbeams only wroks once in a great while. Could someone please tell me where it is located and an general idea how to repair it. Thanks
Also my gas guage will read 1/2 just forever, I can be sitting on fumes and it's still 1/2 tank. Then it drops like a rock past empty. could the float be sticking? can I repair it myself? I have been watching the mileage right now and when it hits around 330 I know I better find a station! Thanks

it is located on your steering column under your dash...the part cost about $26 from gm new..i had to change mine due to not having brights at all...also, when you fix it, make sure you adjust it before you tighten it down

if its not the part hes talkin about it could be the arm itself, which is spendy and i dont think u could change it your self, unless u have a steering wheel puller, the arm thing is like $145!!! and i need one dammit

the arm?....the piece with wipers/cruise control/???

if you pull back on your turn signal arm and it "clicks" and nothing happens...its your dimmer switch

just make sure you adjust this swith before you tighten the dimmer switch or you'll be in the cramped spot it is located in for a bit of time...there is a rod that runs down the column and goes into this little hole, align it and use trial and error and you should able to fix it in about 1 hour or so

How quickly people forget about past friends ..anyways,sounds like the cruise/wiper arm.I just recently bought my 89 RS and I know for a fact it needs a new one because I do not have high beams, plus the arm moves very freely. As far as your gas gauge, sounds like your fuel level sender or possibly the float "sticking" Hope this helps

Brent

there is a tech article here on how to install a floor dimmer. I did it in about 1/2 hr. it bypasses the column stuff all together and works great. no more high beam colum problems. sorry cant remember where article is.

Do this quick test before you take anything apart... Grab the top and bottom of the steering wheel and pull at the top then the bottom, if the wheel tilts and then pops back to normal when you release it then your steering column is loose. Tilt columns have a knuckle in the middle with pressed in pins that allow the assembly to pivot. On my Formula one of these pins backed out and caused the column to not hold its normal length. The end result was that the rod wouldn't push far enough on the switch to activate the high beams. The loose steering column problem happens on about 90% of GM cars, including Fbodies. If nothing else its worth looking into before spending money on parts.
As for the multifunction lever being the culprit, thats virtually impossible since it just goes into a socket that pulls or pushes a rod connected to the high beam switch down on the column. Also the multi function lever is EASY to replace, grab hold of it firmly and pull. If you have cruise control its just a matter of disconnecting the wire before pulling the lever out. Installing a new lever is the reverse, push it in.

On to the gas guage. This is rather typical of thirdgens. Don't ask why, but for whatever design flawed reason, the gas guage needle doesnt move in a linear fashion. The first 1/2 tank will last roughly 2-3 times longer than the last 1/2. It gets exponentially worse the lower it gets. The best advice I can give is to keep it above 1/4 tank at all times, don't go below 1/2 tank on road trips. Calling AAA for someone to bring you gas, or trying to push a 3500lb car to the next gas station isn't worth it.
