firebird front fender rolling/trimming

Hey guys, I have lowered my firebird quite a bit and am concerned about the clearance between the top of the tire and the front fenders. For some dumb reason, GM made these cars with such a thick 'roll under' and it cannot be rolled like a normal modern car.

Can the fender be trimmed out or will I run into some other problem? I'm not talking about the plastic liner...

I used a baseball bat and rolled the lips up while some drove the car slowly forward and back on my Chevelle. But these cars have really thin metal, don't know if it will cause more damage or not
