rear end damage

Hi, i have an 84 z28 and about an hour ago someone rear ended me at a red light, there's not much damage besides paint and the bumper feel extremely soft, like its easy to push in now, is there something behind the bumper that will have to be replaced? Thanks

Re: rear end damage

There's a low impact bumper just behind the bumper cover. Looks like a honeycomb a little bit. That'll have to be replaced.

Thank you, is there a part number or place to get this that you know of?

I'm not too sure where to be honest. If there's a junk yard, near you, you could go take one off yourself. Otherwise try 1aauto.com, or classicindustries, or any other place on here that sells camaro parts. Search for a camaro rear impact absorber. See if that works! You'll know what it is when you see it. It goes in front of the steel impact bar, but behind the cover. Hope that makes sense!

Re: rear end damage

Have you taken the bumper off to inspect yet? You may end up needing more parts than you think.

No I have not, I'm just waiting for the paint shop to match the paint then I will bring it in, I want to take it apart but I'm just gonna wait and have the body shop do it, the guy is paying for everything.

Re: rear end damage

If the bumper cover feels soft, may be because the impact bar behind the honeycomb crush pad is bent. Mine was pushed in 1 1/4 inches, enough to push in the back wall of the trunk well. Replaced the impact bar and was able to use the old crush pad.

Re: rear end damage

I have the rear interior panel off and everything is ok inside the trunk, I already ordered the absorber if need be I'll have to order anything else after they pull the cover, I would do it but I'd rather not deal with the headache

Re: rear end damage

I always leave a full car length ahead of me at lights and keep an eye in the rear view when I'm in the Z. Gives me a chance to gun it forward 15 feet. Terrified this will happen to me.
It's a shame you're so far away. I have a rear impact bar I've been trying to give away with a perfect honeycomb. Going to just toss it this week. Garage is too cluttered.

Lol ya it was weird I actually seen him in my rear view pull up behind me in his BMW we were both stopped for a good minute or two then the advance green went for the turning lane then smack dude hits me, he had his son in the car and he said new was talking to him not paying attention, that's the first time in the 15 years I've had the car that's someone has hit me
