Undercarage cleaner and undercoating

It looks like I will finally have the money to start working on getting my Camaro back on the road (My daily driver got totaled by hail!). It may be closer to winter before I can actually do the the work since I have other unrelated fair weather projects, but while it's warm I would like to get the underside of the Camaro cleaned up so when I get under there to do the work it will be nicer to work on. What is the best way to clean all the grease and road grime off when the car is in the garage? I've gotten some cleaned off on the past with a pressure washer, but with in the garage and on ramps/stands it isn't easy getting anything besides the low points. I'm thinking just rolling under with a putty knife and a wire brush to get the worst of the dirt but is there any good cleaner that I could spray on and use a spray bottle of water to spray off while I'm under there so that I'm not getting a face full of dirt and water?

My second question is what is the best economical undercoating? I would like Lizard skin (use the heat type to spray in trans tunnel since so much heat comes up there, and sound on the rest), but not sure I want to pony up the cost for that. I won't be taking everything apart I have to replace the fuel pump and rebuild the trans, so I will have access to most of the underside but not all.

Thanks

find someone with a lift and a pressure washer and that would be the best way to clean it. but if you have to do it on the ground by hand I would use a car wash mitt and some purple power.

Hey David, Sorry about the hail doing a number on your Camaro. About 2 years ago here in Phoenix, we got hit by a hail storm that damaged over 300,000 cars. The New car dealerships had no cars that they could sell as new. But they did have MAJOR discounts on 'Hail Damage' cars.

IMO - For inside the garage. Use your ramps to raise up the front. Jack up the back, and put a jack stand under each side.

After putting paper/rags on the floor, use your putty knife to scrape off as much crud as possible. Then spray your area down with full strength Simple Green, and let it sit for about 5 min... I buy SG by the gallon full strength, that way you have the option of using it full strength, or diluting to what ever level you want.

Whip out your trusty wire brushs (multiple sizes) and do what you can.

Keeping in mind that your working inside your garage....for rinsing off the the grime and Simple Green area's that you just cleaned, I like to use a 1-2 Gal. tank with a spray hose. The kind tank that you would use to spray weeds or insects. Put your water in, pump up the presure, adjust the nozzle for strength, and rinse away.

NOTE; Simple Green is great for indors because it's Non-Toxic & Biodegradeable.... I would recommend Not using a spray container that previously had contained bug or weed killer, or anything toxic.

Have Fun
