Glue down the ttops?

I am reaching the point to where I hate this car.

Who else has glued their ttops down to solve the leak problem. I have new seals, tried other tops. Adjusted the crap out of them. Yet they still leak. That coupled with the sun baking me I am done. I am thinking of siliconing
them down and making some sun shades. That is until I get a welder and make it a hardtop like it should have been. Anyone done this recently? The lack of hardtop thirdgens and scarce fourth gens around here make me want to switch to a 2000 ish Mustang.

Re: Glue down the ttops?

Sealing them shut will make the car virtually unsellable. They all leak, poor design that was corrected in the 4th gen, if somebody says they don't they are lying.

Just my opinion, but I looked at an 89 Formula 3 weeks ago and once I saw the t-tops with the (I think) roofing compound on them I was done & admittedly a little pissed off that I hadn't thought to ask about them when we spoke.

If you are that unhappy with them, sell the car and buy a hardtop.

Re: Glue down the ttops?

DONT!! GLUE THEM.

buy some of this dielectric grease.
remove the tops, put the grease on any surface that the glass comes into contact with, including the t-bar channel area.

install the tops, and remove any grease that will sqwish out.
this will help in some of the problem areas.

this is what was done when they were new, on the lot at many gm dealerships.

Re: Glue down the ttops?

There are a couple of pdf's floating around here that may help vs. gluing them down.

I'm guessing the the glass and weather stripping expand/contract at different rates so gluing them down may not work at all.

Mine don't leak a drop, and it's outside 24/7. It's more luck of the draw than anything. But if you can't fix a freaking water leak, you have no business near a thirdgen.

Re: Glue down the ttops?

I have dilectric grease. I will try that thank you. I will look for the pdfs too. I guess they are about adjustment. It only leaks on the outside corners.

And yeah i have no business fixing cars, countless fbodys, or whatever for the past 21 years much less one of the stupidest ideas ever put on a car. Great comment thanks for the help Nowhere.

Re: Glue down the ttops?

You are 2 of the lucky few.

Mine leaked from new & every time I took a left hand turn, water would pour out of the front right corner on the passenger side onto my girlfriend's leg.
