Does anybody have pics of the funtional fiberglass hood for Crossfire Injection? Since I will soon be running CFI a thought it would be nice to look around for one the cold air hoods since it would be cheaper than a new SS hood. How does the setup work, I heard that the louvers open up!? I've seen of few of these for sale but nobody whats to ship them, are they really that flimsy? I got my CFI out a junkyard Z28 but of course the hood was already gone !

Yes, they do really open up. It seems as though during normal operation the air is drawn from under the hood via ventwork to the side, but under acceleration, the flaps are pulled open. At least that is the setup on my '83 Z. Unfortunately, I'm in the market for one of the hoods also, because a previous owner destroyed a small section of the driver's side front corner. Maybe a good fiberglas man could repair the corner but who knows.

GM had some rather significant problems with these hoods. Specifically they were recalled cause the two halves of the SMC hoods seperate at the front, so the top of the hood flips up and blocks the view, usually taking out the windshield in the process. Also there were many problems concerning water entering the engine. They aren't really worth the trouble considering the possible threat to the rest of the car.

 

Yeah, I've heard about the problems with the hood. I think I'll still get one, but make sure it is isn't peeling apart, or maybe rebond it together ( possible? ). Some of these hoods caused trouble, but plenty of people have them and they are just fine. As for water entering the engine, wouldn't an SS hood with the scoop feeding the TBs do the same thing? I thought their might be a way to wire in a switch to override the flappers and keep them shut when it is raining. Thanks for the info though. If anybody has some close up pics of the hood, and the airbox underneath, please post em.

 

Even wiring in a switch won't prevent the flaps from opening. They're solenoid driven, if you know anything about the functionality of a solenoid you know that even when they aren't powered the moving parts can still move. So if the wind or a spray of water (carwash) hits it right its goign to let water into the scoop. The Firebirds that used cowl induction used a series of drains and water traps to stop the water, the camaro setup dumps pretty much directly into the CFI.

 

I know how a solenoid works, I didn't know how the flappers opened since I've never seen the setup in person. My CFI aircleaner has drains in it already, but I guess I could fab a little block off plate to put on top of the aircleaner when it rains. That is if I ever find a hood and have the money to buy it.....

 

I thought about putting one on my 83 Coupe for awhile, I had the local salvage yard do a computer search for the hood and they found a couple for $150 ea.

 

Man thats a rip off . If the yard I got my CFI out of still had the hood, I could have got it for about $40. Of course if that price included shipping that is more reasonable. I'm gonna keep lookin but I doubt one will turn up in good shape. All the F-bods around here in the yards are usually totally wasted.

 

there is no way those flappers could be opened by air alone......i just sold my flapper/cfi unit, they were a pain to open without the solienoid....the cfi air intake unit has drains molded into it, about the only bad thing i saw was it would drain out on both sides of the engine onto the manifolds....these flappers would open at a preset rpm and wiring 12 volts directly to the solieniod wwill make its life short


i found a mint condition hood, same black as my car on a 83 sitting in a field, i took the air unit out and have the area where the flapper unit used to be...open...looks cool too

I have the flapper unit out of my 82 Z I will take some pictures of it tomarrow and Email them to you if you like. As for rebonding the hood I used west system epoxie and some carbonfiber mat. And it worked great.

I've got an '83 T/A, so my hood is a bit different. However... I have a solenoid-driven ram air flap, too. I am going to change my flap opener to a small aftermarker power door lock motor. I've got one coming from an Ebay auction ($9.95 delivered) and Radioshack.com had the relays and switch for less than $13 delivered. Radioshack mailed the stuff the same day I ordered it! I'm waiting on the lock motor to get here...
Maybe your Camaro can work with the same set-up? I'll have pics up on my website when I get this finished.
