Help a rookie out! Need fender/painting advice
Help a rookie out! Need fender/painting advice
I'mlooking to start working on my own 1992 stock 3.1L v6 firebird again. I haven'tdone any work to it for about 2 years now (it's been running fine but coulddefinitely use work). So I have the following question:
I was crashed into about a few years ago. The front passenger fender was banged up pretty good and I have about a 2 inch crack in my front bumper.
So my questions are:
1) Where is the best place to find a replacement fender? I've seen several sites and prices range from about $100-$300. Should I get the cheapest or what should I be looking for?
2) What paint supplies would I need to paint the fender? I'm looking to get a list started and I want to buy everything I need little by little. Any step-by-step painting instruction would also be very helpful as I've never painted a car before.
3) How can I fix the crack on my bumper without actually replacing the entire bumper? And what would I need as far as supplies if it even is fixable?
Anyhelp is appreciated. Thank you all.

Re: Help a rookie out! Need fender/painting advice
for a replacement fender i would find a used one from a junk yard or off craigslist i am not a fan of aftermarket parts personal. so i would get a used one feather out any stone chips with 180, and hit an surface rust with a coarse surface wheel and prime the whole fender, then i like to block my primer in 240, then DA sand it with 400. then unless its black i would blend the door so remove the handle, moldings and mirror and grey scuff the door then then once you have the car masked off wipe the door off with wax and grease remover. then you spray the fender with a coat of sealer then base the entire fender until you have coverage then blend the color into the door, then clear the fender and door. let it sit for a few days the for buffing wet sand dirt down with 1200 by hand then i 1500 on a da dry then 3000 wet then buff.
then for the bumper you want to take 80 grit to the back side to take it down to bare plastic. the use 80 on the front to take it down to bare plastic and grove the front of the crack to a v the you spray a plastic adhesion promoter on it, then i use 3m rigid plastic repair and spread it over the front and back where you sanded to bare plastic and on the back side apply a mesh reinforcement into the rigid plastic you put on then sand the front smooth with 80 ( this will not sand back smooth its structural not decorative) then spray adhesion promoter on it agin and apply 3m easy sand on top (must be bare plastic) then block that in 120 then DA 180 then 320 the scuff it , adhesion promote it agin and prime that spot then da the primer in 400 and grey scuff the rest of the bumper wipe it down with wax and grease. then spray sealer on any primer break through you have base over the primer area until you have coverage and then blend the color out and then clear the whole bumper and if done correctly you will never have a issue with the repair
hope that helps

If you want I have two front bumpers for sale, 125 negotiable each. A bit easier than repairing it
