Recommendations for a bike rack for a mountain bike?

Anyone have a bike rack on their car with a hatch?

I have a large bike with a 21" frame (i'm 6'2") and it's rather big. I have to bag the wheels and stuff it into the car every time, and it's getting to be a hassle. I heard that you can use a Hollywood racks F1B but I've only seen one picture and that car didn't have a hatch.

I've used one that works wonderful, I fit two bikes on it! It's a cheapo one from Bell.

The two straps that are attached to the trunk; actually attach to the hatch glass at the very top (where some models have the third brake light). The bottom straps don't actually attach to anything (I didn't bother) as the weight of the two bikes seemed sufficient.

Re: Recommendations for a bike rack for a mountain bike?

I was going to get the one from Walmart but they had to order it and it went up in price. My buddy and I went to Academy (local sporting goods place) and they had the Bell Cantilever 300 for like $49.99. The only real difference I see is that the 300 holds 3 bikes and the 200 holds 2. Plus, they had it in stock and all I had to do was swing buy and nab it.

It actually did very well. I took it up to 60mph and it held pretty tight. I did mount the top straps to the top of the glass, the bottom to underneath and the sides around the hatch just before the valance. I mounted it two different ways and the way I have in the pictures doesn't bounce as much. My friend was very adamant about making sure that the bottom straps were attached, so we spent awhile messing with it.

I used bungee cords from Harbor Freight to secure the handlebars to the frame and around the pedals to keep it from moving. Then two more bungees wrapped around the top tube over the bike and bike rack in the middle, just in case the velcro straps opened up.

Thanks for the tip!

That's Great! I drove on the freeway (+60MPH) as well and it did just fine. Glad my experience has allowed you to enjoy your ThirdGen a bit more

Re: Recommendations for a bike rack for a mountain bike?

My suggestion would be to get a hidden hitch and use a hitch mounted one.

It's good to see I'm not the only one that's wanting to haul bikes with their third gen. I was curious about the hidden hitch on our cars as opposed to the bell straps. I'd be worried about those straps pulling on my glass at 60mph.
