Stress cracks on body

I have a couple of stress cracks just above the door glass on both sides, they run about 2 inches long. I'm not sure if it's fixable or am I better off parting out the car. It's an 87 GTA coupe. Any help is greatly appreciated

Re: Stress cracks on body

Not uncommon for these cars...unfortunately.The sooner you remedy it, the better.By itself, definitely not a reason to part it out.

Yes, I had one on each side and my painter just welded with a bead over it and ground it down.
You can not see it now.
Terrible photo but you get the idea.
Installing sub frame connecters is a great idea and will prevent that from happening again.

Re: Stress cracks on body

I prefer Alston SFC's and not just becasue I sell them. I've actually had them installed on my Canaro RS 'vert long before I started Top-Down Solutions. The things I like about Alston is:
1) They connect the front and rear subframes by the shortest route possible (less weight to add to the car).
2) They have a formed sheet metal cup that is forced onto the front and rear subframes providing a lock onto the subframe even before you drill and bolt them on or weld them on (welding is preferred).
3) Aready mentioned briefly, you have the option of drilling and bolting them on yourself, then driving to a shop to have them welded in later.
4) They are an inner-style of SFC and will therefore fit all versions of the car (hard top, t-top or convertible). Some brands are a perimiter-mount meaning they run along the pinch-weld just behind the GFX (if you have them). Those will not fit convertibles since the 'vert has a factory installed formed sheet metal reinforcement located there.
5) At under 20 lbs they are the lightest available.
6) Yes they stick down 1.75" below the floor pan, but since they are made from the same steel tubing that Alston uses to make their roll cages, they also help to protest your intermediate pipe from getting crushed.
7) Fit both single & dual cat exhaust systems.

Re: Stress cracks on body

For the common stress crack in the roof, drill a hole at the end of the crack, then weld it.

Re: Stress cracks on body

Just installed a set. Do it. These cars need them. And I recommend purchasing from Top Down Solutions for most reliable delivery in a reasonable time. I ordered for a slightly lower price elsewhere and it took two or three weeks to arrive, and there was no shipping or routing information supporting if/when they were shipped. You get what you pay for.

You don't need to register on the website to get a quote for S&H. Just put all the items you wish to buy into your shopping cart, then click on shopping cart in the upper right side of the screen. A menu will pop up in the middle on the left side of the screen. Click on "Estimate shipping & taxes", enter your country, state & zip code and your shipping options will be presented along with their cost.
