I have a 92 gta and I need a rebuild kit for the hatch pull down. I need the plastic gear and brushes for the motor. I could replace the motor if I need to. I want to know the best place to get the parts. I have found that mid 91 the parts changed and I can't find the parts for a 92. Thanks for any help.

First post in about 4 years since i sold my 1990 Firebird Formula...but I had the same problem with mine when i had it. If I remember correctly I believe they make a metal/aluminum gear that I would recommend getting since you will have the motor out of your trunk anyways. I bought mine off amazon or ebay and honestly they are all about the same.

 

I just bought 2 of the gears from Top Down Solutions. After having the whole mechanism apart I'd recommend sticking with the plastic gear nut. I think it's plastic because it's designed to fail before other components to potentially save the motor. It's easy to change once know how to take it apart, so I just bought 2 so I've got one on reserve in case I ever need it. Also I found that having strong properly functioning hatch struts really makes a difference in how the mechanism works so I would replace them at the same time if they don't work well enough that they keep the hatch open. That's just my assessment though, I'm sure plenty of other people have dealt with them a lot more than I have.

 

Didn't think of the the plastic gear essentially be a "safety" for the whole motor. When I did mine I bought a replacement plastic gear that stripped shortly after replacing and never had any problems after using the metal gear. Might have been different issues. Very good idea tho to buy an extra gear just in case!
