I used that cheap stuff in the gold can at home depot. Rinsed it off as soon as I could with great results

I would use the SEM stuff and then let it sit in a nice dry, warm place for a few days just to make sure anything that could have been absorbed in to the plastic has a chance to escape... Likely not needed, but that's what I would do.
When I decide to re-do the car, first thing I'm stripping is all the rubber so it will sit bare in the loft of the garage until the rest of the car has been done.
