What is the name of this part?

I think I might have some rust forming on the frame under the door of my 88 GTA. I don't know the name of the part that is rusting. I thought it was a "rocker panel" for some reason, but had no luck finding a pic that looked right.

When you open the door and look down at the "threshold", which you step over to get into the car, there is a long plastic piece covering it, which bends down and under the car. This long plastic piece is attached to something, maybe the frame, with several phillips head screws on top, and a few bolts or something underneath.

I've spent hours searching for a pic of what is under this plastic cover. I want to know what I'm getting into when I remove it to check the rust. I'm afraid the screws won't go back in tightly, something may come apart that won't go back together properly, etc, etc..

I was searching this forum using terms like "rust under door" "rust rocker panel" "rust frame" and got all kinds of pics but not of my part.

Can anyone point me to a pic of this part? Also what is the name of the plastic "threshold" thing ? And is it the frame rail that it is screwed onto? BTW it goes all the way from the front fender back to the rear fender.

Thanks,

GTA88

http://www.rickscamaros.com/camaro-r...1982-1992.html and http://www.rickscamaros.com/camaro-r...1982-1992.html or go to a scrap yard and cut off some good ones. http://www.classicindustries.com/pro...s/694100l.html and http://www.classicindustries.com/pro...s/694100r.html If your plastic isn't broke you can reuse it. If the steel is rusted underneath, you cut it and replace it with new.

Red Rock,

Thanks for replying. Those pics are rocker panels. Is it a rocker panel that is underneath the big plastic cover that goes from fender to fender? Is the plastic part screwed into a rocker panel ?

I can't find anything on youtube or google that shows the names of these things that are under the door.

Re: What is the name of this part?

Are you askin' about this ??

This is a rocker panel EXTENSION. It got spot welded to the rocker panel only to cars with ground FX. There are at least 4 different versions of this thing that I know of.

82-84 TA
85-?? TA
85-90 Z28
91-92 Z28

I can't recall if the 82-84 Z28 was the same as later cars and have never owned a 90-92 TA.

The one pictured above is from an 85-90 TA. I compared it to each side of my 88 GTA and it appears to be compatible with both the Left & Right side of the car. If you need a replacement and are interested in this one just send me a PM with your ZIP code.
