Long tube header install on thirdgen
I'm trying to install long tube headers on my 91 Z28. Passenger side is installed. Having trouble with drivers side. I pulled all spark plugs & oil pressure sending unit.I have pulled drivers side motor mount bolt n raised eng.but I haven't removed oil filter. Anyone have suggestions to install through to or bottom?

Traxion's Hooker 2210 Long Tube install thread is probably the best documented install I know of. its a sticky at the top of this forum.
But there isnt' much to installing them. Keep trying, see what they hit, then find ways around it.
My 2210's took probably 4 hours to install. However, thats because I kept having to change things like brake line routing, knock sensor location....etc.
Now that everything is clearance it takes about an hour to pull them out of the car, or put them in. Thats accounting for Y-pipe, spark plugs..etc.

Thanks guys.

Yes I was planning on removing oil filter. Think I might have to raise up front end some more.got car on 4 jack stands about a foot or so off ground. Headers ar made by Stainless Works out of Ohio. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated, thanks again for all your help.

Very tight fit.starter has to be removed. You will need the smaller mini starter you can find (I got mine from jegs).drivers side , you will have to remove motor mount bolt raise eng, remove oil filter n oil sending unit.lower eng the bolt up header.dipstick will also have to be removed .I your using the nice BMR torque arm and trans mount, forget about that mount. Will not clear exhaust. I had to use my stock trans crossmember weld in a piece of 1/4"×3"×8" flat stock for torque arm mount (for BMR torque arm).found mouth bracket at jegs (hooker headers makes a bolt on bracket that works).if using stock torque arm that mounts to trans, you should be ok! Good luck! Any questions feel free to hit me back!

Re: Long tube header install on thirdgen
my Hedmans slide right in, but i did have to take the starter out to do it and had to do some "massaging" of a couple of tubes on each side when i first put them in 4 years ago..
now that i've swapped in a 5 speed, i needed to dent the collector on the driver's side, but i think i'm going to redo it with a set of homemade merge collectors instead because at leas that looks like something you'd see on a race car...

Re: Long tube header install on thirdgen
I've just received some OBX Racers longtube headers I purchased a few days ago from Ebay. I won't mention the price as it may make some people sick to their stomach. They are pretty much identical to Stainless Works. Bolts or studs for these types of headers? Studs would be nice since you could put the gaskets in place then slide the headers on. But is there enough room? The OBX kit comes with individual exhaust gaskets for each exhaust port, not sure about the SW kit...

bolts... throw the gaskets that came with the headers away and get some copper gaskets. loosely hang the headers in place with the end bolts, then drop the gasket in with the raised ring toward the head, then put the rest of the bolts in and tighten it down.

Re: Long tube header install on thirdgen
It depends on what headers you have. For my 2210LT's I don't have to jack the engine up. But I do have to remove/install the starter at the exact same time as the passenger header. Its just one of those things.

I went with the OBX 1 3/4" stainless long tubes. No issues at all. Almost fell in.

Re: Long tube header install on thirdgen
Sorry to ask a stupid question but what's the pitch and thread of the manifold bolts for the 1986 SBC stock heads? AND are they the same for the AFR heads?

Sofa you're a lifesaver. I don't care what anyone else says about you.
I'm about to put a sizeable order into Summit for my 383 engine build and some extraneous stuff for my current car so I can mount this OBX exhaust system. Thx!
