rearview mirror

OK--so this should be simple enough; however, I cannot get the rearview mirror to stay glued to the windshield...

I have gone through at least three trial with the permatex adhesive, and within a day or two, the mirror is invariably hanging by the electric wire.

Part of the problem, I believe is that the I should be gluing just the "button" to he windshield, and later installing the mirror to the button; however, a PO must have tried to repair and put enough glue that the mirror is not glued tot he button.

I"ve tried taping the mirror in place to help support while the adhesive cures, but alas, no luck...

Any tricks, or recommendations for something better than the permatex?

Re: rearview mirror

You NEED to separate the button from the mirror for any kind of success.

Can you get the Torx screw out of the mirror mount?

You can destroy the button if you have to; they're available separately.

When you're ready to glue the button to the glass you need to have the glass CLEAN. ammonia-free window cleaner and newspaper works well. After the windshield is clean, use the towelette. With cyanoacrylate adhesives, more isn't necessarily better.

Re: rearview mirror

Block sand the mount with fine sandpaper.

Once the mount is attached make 100% sure it doesn't move.

Hold 1 min at least w/ good pressure( not too much or you can crack the windshield).

My arm would tire, so I used my foot on the mount (don't laugh) leg wont tire as easily).Lasted 7 yrs until a couple weeks ago.

Wait at least 24 hrs before re-attaching the mirror.

Re: rearview mirror

Took it to safelite (only about 5 miles away)...they re-attached for no charge! See if it lasts...I suspect they use better adhesive than is available at parts stores...

Re: rearview mirror

I've had the same lingering problem for 2-3 years; the mirror just falls off shortly after the button is installed no matter what the conditions are when I try to get it set. ( cleaning, temp, humidity, ect ) I thought I had FINALLY gotten the thing to stay in place this season,........ but then it fell off again yesterday on my drive out to a local car show. I've used the permatex adhesive several times,... no more ! I really need to find something else because I'm just throwing away $$ trying to use that crap !!

Re: rearview mirror

My brother had the same issue, I believe it is the left over glue/ residue preventing it from making a good seal. We have a surface grinder at work so he took the metal plate that glues to the windshield and took a couple thousandths off. It has stayed on for about a year now,
