So I decided to tackle the repair of my rusted-out floor pans. I have been trying to stall on them because I knew they were not in the best shape. Does anyone have any tips or tricks on anything to do with the whole process? I just started to cut out the majorly damaged areas now. I plan on getting whole new floor pans rather than patch panels. How should I tackle the small quarter-size rust holes that the new floor pans would not cover?
Looks like you’ll need both side floor pans. Drill out the spot welds and cut down the middle of the transmission/driveshaft tunnel. You’ll have to remove the cross braces by drilling the spot welds and then welding them back in as long as they aren’t rusted too. Take measurements and mark the rockers before removing them so the go back in the right locations so you seats will bolt up.
For spots where the new floor pans don’t reach, you’ll have to make patch panels from sheet steel.
When I do floors I use self tappers and screw it down to the braces before I start welding so they are good and tight. Once all the other holes are welded up I remove my screws and weld up those holes. Not a fun job but rewarding once done. Good luck with your project.
Hey did you get these repaired? I need to do my passager side front due to a leaking heater core while it say in storage. Mine dont look near as bad as your and I am stressing about mine.
Been there done that. The more you look the more you'll find.
Mine had rust leading up to to cowl area, it started getting into the inner rockers too...
Watch out for the fuel lines, they are on the drivers side by the trans tunnel and the clutch stuff if you start going upwards.
When you start grinding things, don't let the sparks near any glass as they will pit and embed into it.
Take your time and don't give up, it gets tedious after a while.
