Taillight swap? Van Nuys paint problems??
I just purchased a 92 Firebird Formula 350 a couple of nights ago, and was wondering how hard it would be to swap the taillights for a set of the Trans Am "Cheesegraters". Will any set of lights from 87 up work, or do they have to be from a 91 or 92 T/A? Also, the car only has 69,000 miles on it, and the paint looks good- except on the plastic. The nose, rear bumper, and spoiler are badly faded. Has anyone gotten GM to help with that? I understand it was the Van Nuys plant that screwed up the paint by making it waterbased, or something like that. Thanks for any info.
The older style will definitely work--should be just plug and play in there(3 piece) I've swapped out that style for the 2 piece style w/o a problem--only problem you'll have is the Formula style lights have more plugs(parking lights) then the T/A style does. But you can just pull the bulbs out of those and tuck them away--no cutting-. Sorry I can't help you abpout the paint issues--but since the car is a 92 it's like 10 yrs old--so I don't think GM will be willing to do anything for you.
My drk met. green 91 fb did the same. Ive read that it has something to do with Cal. EPA laws which keep them from using a certain type of paint/additive. This causes it to fade. thats what I've heard.

Sounds like your car has already been through the recall. The plastic pieces, they would leave alone, because they usually did not pose the pealing problem.
My 91 was like that, they painted all the metal, but not the bumpers,
go fig
