How do i replace or fix the speedo cable in my car?

How do i replace or fix the speedo cable in my car?
I think that it just may have fallen off the speedo, so i do i get to it to check it out. Do i have to take off the speedo guage? I have no helms or chilton, so i really don't know what to do. Please help.
