What holds the headlight **** assembly in place?

I pushed my headlight **** in to turn my lights off and it just gave out. I looked all behind it and everything. The **** is attached to a metal rod, which goes into the dash I guess you could call it, where it goes into a box. Well, whatever is supposed to hold that box in place obviously isn't there anymore. What should be there and how do I fix it? PLEASE help!

it's a little black clip right behind the ****. i found this out at a junk yard after pulling the SOB off and cutting my finger on it. i had to pull like hell to get it off.

Remove the **** and shaft as a unit. There is a release button on the bottom of the headlight switch. Pull off the hush panel (the plastic trim below the dash) then use a flashlight and a long screwdriver to push the button. Pull on the **** while you press the release button. The shaft is triangular shaped as I recall. Lon

Does this black clip attach to the back side of the black panel that the rod runs through? Does it just hold the rod or does it also have a support for the "box" behind there?
Thanks
