Power Door Locks..

Hey guys. Was wondering if anyone is familiar with the power door lock set up. My car doesn't have them, but i found a junkyard car that does.... Is it as easy as just installing the power door lock pannel on the door, or is it a pain in the ****?

Furthermore, my passenger side door lock/handle assembly is alllll f-ed up. The door doesn't want to shut all the way, the handle on the inside doesn't latch completely, and the key won't go in on the passenger side..... What is the best method of repair here? Can i use any parts from a junkyard car or do I need to buy them all new? (because i need the key to work).

Thanks,

I'm going to be putting power locks in my bird soon as well. As far as I know it's just a matter of mounting it then wiring it properly. Be sure to grab the relay for the locks though that is behind the drivers side kick panel... you'll have one hell of a time trying to get it to work w/o it.

As for the lock assembly, I'd say grab a new one off Ebay or something, they're not hard to install. You just have to disconnect all the rods, about 4 i think, and then 3 screws holding it to the door.

Will any old lock assembly work w/ my key or does it need to be specific??

Relay on the kick pannel... can you be a little more specific?

Thanks

I would think that any lock asm from a camaro or firebird from 82-92 would work.

my 83 T/A was the same way, power windows no power locks, go fig...

If you don't want to do it yourself. Have a place that installs alarms and keyless entry but they will add an acuator. This way will cost more but you won't have to worry about how hard it is.

thats a good idea AS LONG AS they use the stock buttons, I have yet to see aftermarket switches that look good.

IMO

I'm definitely up for doing it myself, I was just wondering about how it will work with my key... But it sounds all good I'll get around to it next week and post how it goes.

the key thing should be no problem. Since you keeping your current the door locks, all your key locks will not change, what you will be changing is the door lock solinoids, wiring, and some of the linkage from the solinoid to the lock mech.

in short, your keys will still work.

the only thing is you will more than likely become a contortionist fitting all this stuff in the doors. If I remember right there is not alot of room...

The relay is behind the drivers side kick panel, thats the panel by the pedals where you hood release lever is. It wil be covered in black tar and held in by one bolt. At least thats how the car was that I found it off.

Go to one of the junkyards where you pull the parts off yourself.

Find one car with power locks, and one without. Remove one door panel from each car.

Observe any differences in the two mechanisms; take notes and/or photos if necessary.

After you've determined what parts you need to convert your car, then you can remove them from the junk car.
