lock on fuel door
lock on fuel door
I have never actually seen a lock on a filler (fuel) door so I am wondering, is the hole for the lock just round or is it shape such that you have to buy a door that has the hole already in it. I want to put one on my 84 Trans Am and I have seen the lock in the Classic Industries catalog pretty cheap. I am just not sure if the fuel door area needs to have something done to make the retro fit or not. http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/84transam/

why not just get a locking gas cap?
i think that would be easier, and they are pretty cheap.

It's been awhile since I've seen one of those--but from what I remember-the lock looks like the lock on the car doors(f-bodies)-has the round bezel around it- , it's in the 3 o'clock postion.
I'm sure you could just drill a hole and put the lock in w/no problems--but you'd have to notch the inner part near the fuel cap--that black soft rubber piece that surrounds the filler neck(in the quarter panel).

I just removed my locking gas cap assembly. I have the inside black piece(I think...) that sits around the filler neck and I have the gas door with lock on it. It is brown in color but im sure that doesn't matter because you'll paint it anyway.
I left it at my father in laws house of which i am visiting this coming weekend. I believe it is still in his shed. I hope he didn't pitch it.
If I still have it which I belive I still do. Do you want it?

yeah I would be interested in the door with the lock on it if you still have it. I do have a locking gas cap but anything to make it harder for someone to mess with my car the better. living in mpls I have had enough vandilism done to my car that I don't trust people as much anymore. how much would you want for the door with the lock on it plus shipping to Kasson Mn 55944. the lock in the classic ind catalog is only $13.00 brand new. lmk southpaw1969@hotmail.com http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/84transam/
I had one on my 83 Trans-Am....the whole door is flat with no little finger hole to open it with you had to put in a key and pull it open with hte key.......don't you member my old one beavis?
by the way if anyone else has one i need one too.

Just remember the key for the cap! I had a locking gas cap on my truck and I went to fill it up. Well, I grabbed the wrong set of keys, of course the one that didnt have the key for it, and I almost ran out of gas getting home and back.
Not as much as i regret not fixing after it got hit in htat storage place.
It was motorless then had body damage on top of it and i just dumped it for parts.
Man i wish i still had that car
Oh well my Formula's coming along nicley

Vapor Lock
Just remember (As I know from experience) our fuel systems are pressurized (sp? it's late) systems. With a locking gas cap you seal off this system. Think of it this way... What happens when you are drinking a coke from a plastic bottle? After the liquid is gone the bottle starts to collapse upon itself unless it has a way to regulate the pressure... Our stock gas caps allow air to come in and regulate the system IE a hole in the bottle for air to get in.
I actually destroyed my fuel pump because of this and every time I took the cap off you could hear the gas tank re-expand, not good. Getting stuck 75 miles from home and having to pay the tow charge sucks, not to mention our in tank, hard as heck to get at, fuel pumps that I spent a day and a half getting at, not fun.
My .02 is either put a locking gas door on (probably pretty easy to do) or just keep your ride in the garage and away from the kids in the neighborhood that have the sugar

Actually, we have a vapor canistor thingy attached to the fuel lines, it is a small white thing above the rear axle.
That is the pressure relief valve, not sure exactly what it is called but a friend of mine and I had a discussion about this part today as a matter of fact. His wouldn't work and his tank would become pressurized and the car would start to surge. When he'd open up the gas cap, it would nearly shoot off in his hand.
He replaced that part and all was fine. His car is an 86 Iroc, he is the original owner and he's changed that part twice since he bought the car.
You are supposed to have a slight vacuum in the tank, not pressure.

How come u guys got locks?
MAn my SPort COupe must be with out any of these things.
I dont have these side vents, only the small ones and the 2 front ones. I dont got power windows or locks, no fuel compartment lock. But what I do have :
Automatic Hatchback lock
A Button to open the hatchback from inside.
I think thats it.

I am adding PW, PDL, I already have the 4th gen console and power leather seats
I am looking for a steering column with tilt and cruise too, but since I am putting in a LS1 I am waiting to match that cruise and everything up with it.

BTW- my friend had a 91 Grand Am, and you could only release the fuel filler door from inside the car. I think that is a pretty swift idea.
