Steering column messed up

I had to take it down to the tilt steering knuckle in order to tighten three small bolts that loosened themselves up and caused my steering wheel to be loose. A small banana shaped spring type clip fell out, and I can't figure out where it came from. Now, my steering wheel won't lock at all, and I have the key stuck in the ignition accessary position, and of course, the key won't come out. Anyone have a GM manual diagram that might show where this stupid clip goes.

Its more than just a clip that you have assembled incorrectly. Tear it all the way back down, and reassemble it using a recent Chiltons or GM shop manual to get it right.

BTW it sounds like at the very least you have a problem with the lock rod assembly... if you have that spring installed incorrectly that could be causing it... but its not really shaped like a banana.

Thanks for the response DREW, Actually, I didn't reinstall the spring clip, because I couldn't find where it could have possibly went, and I was in a hurry to return the lock plate compressor I was renting.

So basically, I figured I would put it back together and see what DIDN'T work, so I'd know what it was. Stupid idea. I know.

The more I look at that clip, the more I think it may be for the "Buzzer" for the ignition switch. I think it just clips somewhere in near the key tumbler.

Anyways, I'll take the advice and get a manual at the library. If I see a breakdown picture of the steering column, I can figure it out. If anyone has the ability to post a breakdown view of the column, I could sure use it!!

:lala: :lala:

BTW: My Haynes manual sucks a** and doesn't cover anything.
