LT1 Rear & LS1 Rears

i currently have a 89' BW 9 Bolt disc rear. what is the difference between the LT1 Rear ends and the LS1 rear ends? is it the brakes? calipers? i assume that an LS1 rear can be "bolted" in a thirdgen correct? i know that the LT1 rear is 1.5" wider on each side right. The LT1 rear has different parking brake cables than a thirdgen. i can get a LS1 rearend for cheap so, will the brakes on the LS1 Rear work with the thirdgen hydralics. or would a rear out of a LT1 make a better/easier fit and would the brakes work better? please help!!! i have given up on the rear disc brakes on my 9bolt.

There is a excellant tech article about adapting the LS1 brakes to a drum brake housing you should give a look. They might just bolt up to you rear with no mod. Even tho' it's only 1.5" it's a lot when your wheels stick out of the WW. If you can get the LS1 end for cheap and want the fourth gen or aftermarket wheels I would definatly go for it. I have a LT1 rear in mine and am trying to get all the good stuff together so I can so I can adapt the brakes to the old one and build it up. Not fond of the way it looks currently and the larger tires I want to put on would just make it worse.

Picks of the swap

Just last weekend I put an LS1 rear out of an 98 SS into the RS. Jesus was it a pain. Mainly because it was my first time swapping rears. really nothing to it at all. She bolted right in. One thing to watch if you've got rear drums, we only have one line running to the MC, whereas the LS1 has two diffrent lines. I simply took the old connector out of the drum rear and put it on the LS1. this will work, just remember to get some lines. The size of one of the lines is diffrent than the thirdgen. I've got pics on my site, if you wanna check it out. www.vorliant.com/Mike

hey mike let me know how it brakes. (well how good the rear brakes work). i myself currently have the 4 wheel disc on my roc BW rear, w/89+ rear setup. i am having problems with the rebuilt pbr's right now so i said screw it. might as well get a rear with better gearing and WORKING brakes right???

minor problem...hehe

Well Myst. , I'd love to tell ya that she brakes like a champ, but I don't have rear brakes at all at the moment. I'm going to go ahead with the all new brake system which is going to cost me a sh*tload, but it'll be worth it. I can say that I have no problem with her tearin' loose. She'll do that like it's nothin. I didn't think that she'd have enough to rip em' from 1st to second, but she'll even do that. I didn't know if the 305 would have enough juice for it. I can tell you that it was well worth it, and that if you are going to chose between an LT1 and an LS1, I'd go with the LS1. Just one Camaros opinion.....

the main diff's are ....

the tosion posi unit's in the LS1's hold better than the aurburns
in the LT1's...

e-brakes .. LT1's use the setup like the 3rd gens , with the
e-brakes pulling on the disc .. the LS1's have a drum brake
for the ebrake ...

so in short ... the LS-1 has a better posi chunk in it ... and
the braking power is identical ..until you actually need the
ebrake for something other than parking

oopps .. there is also an issue with the center hub on the
LS-1's .. the hub is smaller on the LS1's .. causing the
wheels to "hang" from the lugs .. older cars have hub
concentric wheels .. newer cars are lug concentric .. if you
try to run LS1 wheels on anything else you'll need to
grind the centers out just to bolt them up ...

how do you hook up the ebrake from say a fourth gen LT1 car on our thirdgens? the setup is slightly different..everything is mounted on the tunnel rather than it just sorta "hanging".

well on a LT1 rear is the ebrake assembly necessary? for adjustment or anything? if not i guess if it can't be adapted i will do without it.

really ??? I can't tell if I'm under a 3rd or a 4th gen by looking
at the rear ... the e-brake cable mounts to the tunnel in the same
in either car ... only diff is the 4th gen has longer cables on one side since they are on "leading" edges versus mixed on
sides on a thirdgen ...... right ????

The mount is slightly different (93z vs 89L03), but doesn't look too hard to modify
