Dust Shields

I have an 83 TA which will see about 4 open lap days on fast tracks, one of which is hard on brakes, and maybe three Solo 2/autocross events all on fairly open courses designed for the bigger cars.

The car is only street driven on weekends in good weather.

Pads are Bendix Titanium on the stock J65, iron caliper 4 wheel disk setup.

I'm considering removing the dust shields from the front spindle assembly to improve cooling.

Anyone have comments, pro and contra, about this given that the car is not a dedicated track car but only sees limited street usage.

Thanks

George

It's not a problem. 1LE cars didn't have them, and most of "us" will remove them anyway for various reasons.

Agreed, I have removed mine and been running no problems with full time street use. The shields help prevent picking up road debris like tiny pebbles/dirt into the rotor that can catch between the rotor and pad on the back side. I have yet to have any troubles with this front or rear with full time street use.

Thank explains a lot. I'm transferring '92 1LE car into my '86 shell. The 1LE front brakes didn't have the dust shields and I think I tossed the '86 ones a while back. Anyways, I'm putting on some brake ducting and need 2 of the bolts/screws that hold on the dust shield. Does anyone know the thread size/pitch/length that I need? Or better yet, does someone have a pair they don't need that they wouldn't mind mailing to me?
