1LE brakes...

Did the cars with the 1LE performance package have different rear disk brakes than the cars with the standard J65 rear disk option?

I've been led to believe that the 1988 1LE's had the same Delco Moraine calipers in the rear as the rest of the 1988 J65 cars. Given that the chances of ever seeing a 1988 1LE are slim to none, it makes no difference.

The GM F-body Parts Catalog is pretty clear about the difference between 1LE and non-1LE in '88.

But as a practical matter, I couldn't agree more with your second sentence.

I have an 1988 A4U car (players racing series) and it has the 1 LE brake package all around, PBR calipers front and rear.
