backing plates and wheel cylinders

ok i am going to do a brake job on my 86 camaro, the lands have deep grooves cut into them, i was gong to get a new set of backing plates from advance for 30 bucks a pair until i was told to put them on i needed to remove my diff cover and pull my axles is this true. also i've heard the wheel cylinder is different in removal on these cars. if so could anyone give me some helpful tips, i would appreciate it thanks guys. ( i'm thinking of filling in the backing plates with a welder and grinding them back down)
