Disc Brake Retainer Spring?

I'm changing my front brake pads for the stock 10.5" brakes. My Helm manual says something about a "Shoe Retainer Spring". This piece is missing. It was never on before and my brakes seem to operate fine. Should I go ahead and re-assemble without it? What does it do? How vital is it?

A shoe retainer spring is on rear drum brakes.

Well a little tinkering and I answered my own question. I couldnt get the new pads on without the piece, I'm not sure what was keeping the old ones in. Just had to buy a brake hardware kit for $7 and it included the spings.
