rear disc upgrade...
so far as i stand i have rear drums. i have been looking around at scrap yards and the best price i can get on a rear end with disc's is 400 canadian. however, i got for free a set of the stock disc brakes with the mounting bracket and all the parts but i remember someone telling me i cant just swap them over on my car?
im just now wondering why it is that i cant just change them to disc? i know the metering valve needs to be replaced but im not so sure about the master cylinder?
Also i recently did a motor swap and i crushed my brake line to the rear end. i am going to replace asap but just wondering about the rear disc swap? is it the exact same size steel tube or is it infact a different size?
so recap..
1) will the disc setup fit on my rear drum setup as it stands or do u need to do modifications to make it work??( i do already have the backing plate that comes stock with the car. from the scrap camaro )
2) what else needs to be changed out for the disc brakes to work?
3) is it the same size steel brake line that goes to the rear end?
thanks alot for your time..
Douglas
P.s ive read and heard alot that the PBR setup is much better however with what i have now i would like to make do? im in school so im trying not to spend to much to get my camaro going for this summer.
thx

the brake lines are the same f4ront to back, the lines on the axle are different for disc cars, you can make your work but you will have to shorted them or bend a loop in them. the disc will not bolt right one because the axle flange is different. it can be modded to work. if you really want rear discs, i would recomend a ls1 rear disc swap. there is a tech article in the tech section that outlines how to do it. it is a much better setup that the stock brakes, and not that hard to do. you will need different e-brake cables, and edmiller is trying to have them made but its been a while and nothing seems to be happening with them, problems with the manufacturer. also you need 3rd gen rear disc flex lines because the ls1 ones have differnt threads.
hope this helped a bit

2) The rear end itself is a direct swap, especially 82-89. The 90-92 cars have a difficulty with a self-adjusting e-brake. IIRC, the general consensus is that the drum M/C will work fine. You'll need a disc combo valve (depending on what year your car is--you might consider providing that info in your sig). Lines can be purchased from several soures:

3) Yes.

hey i found a whole rear end from a 1999 transam 99,000 miles on it. is all firebirds and camaro and transams ls1 or not? any info would be great
also, if im going to upgrade the rear, would it not be best to upgrade the fronts as well? i can get the front ls1 discs for cheap as well? would i need to buy the whole new spindle or would this not work?
best regards

awesome, ok, so just to recap so i know, what you are saying. should i get this rear end from the states i just want the disc components. the modifications to mount to my car would be the axle flange drilling and the cut the bearing off as stated in that thread. and then bolt everything else up... my master cylinder would then have the stock brakes on the front and the LS1 on the back would that not cause my problems? thanks for the time you have put into this
