82 LS1 Swap Info

I have a 1982 Camaro with rear disk brakes and I want to upgrade brakes all the way around. I found a 2000 Camaro V6.

I can get all the calipers, brackets and rotors for $180. Is that a good deal?

Will the rear LS1 disk setup swap out with my rear disk brakes?

Do I need a new hub or can I modify my rotor hub to work? What hub has the larger outer bearing?

Will the C5 calipers fit under the 16" IROC wheels with the LS1 brackets?

Ed how do I get a hold of you to get the plates and braided hoses?

Thanks in advance,

Re: 82 LS1 Swap Info

I can't answer all your questions but here's what I know.

$180 probably isn't a bad price if you can get the e-brake cables too. Depending on how many miles are on the donor car I might recommend getting new calipers while you've already got it all apart anyway.

On the rears:
Because you have an 82 you may have problems with different flares on the stock brake lines but I'm not 100% on this.

Yes, the LS1 rears essentially swap right in if you already have a disk rear end. You need to get the stock LS1 caliper bracket and swap that in place of the stock cast iron caliper bracket (you'll have to take out your axels so get some gear oil and limited slip diff additive). The LS1 rotors just slip right on like normal. I'm not 100% sure which parking brake cables you'd need though, you'd need to talk to someone who's done the swap.

On the fronts:
No, C5 brakes will not fit in 16" wheels. 17" minimum is required. It doens't look like LS1 and C5 calipers can use the same bracket. From the pictures I've seen the LS1 bracket has one bolt hole in it and the C5 has 2.

For LS1s (or C5s) you have to modify the spindle and get a hub. You can buy the modified spindle with the hub and bracket (use your own calipers and rotors) from www.bigbrakeupgrade.com for a reasonable price. I think you come out even just buying their complete kit if you go with new calipers (w/o a core return) and rotors from a parts store but it might come out cheaper if you get a really good deal on used parts. The LS1 and C5 brakes use a slip on rotor (like the rears) rather than the one piece rotor/hub design like the stock 3rd gen brakes. You can see what I'm talking about by looking at the pictures on the Big Brake Upgrade site. They also sell Earl's brake hoses for the fronts.

Hope this helps.

Re: 82 LS1 Swap Info

Thanks Compuwiz,

I though I read somewhere that the calipers from a C5 would fit on the LS1 setup. The C5 have a better casting, either way all is better than the stock setup. I thought about getting the setup from BigBrakeUpgrade, but I would rather spend less (hopefully) and learn something I can teach my buddies in the process.

Thanks for the confirmation on the rear setup.

Re: 82 LS1 Swap Info

I've heard you can use C6 calipers on the C5 setup but I'm pretty sure you can't use LS1 calipers on the C5 setup since the brackets are different.
