Too odd to explain...

So my brakes are just weird... I'll explain.

The pedal when I start the car almost needs a few pumps before the brakes even work properly. And when they do work, they work hardly at all unless I mash em right to the floor. And if I have to mash them to the floor, the front brakes stick on to the point my car can hardly move. Then over time they release.

They just don't feel right either, they feel very very very loose until the pedal hits the floor, and then they come on but still weak. Also if I just pump the pedal a bunch of times, they come on harder and harder until they just lock on. When I release the pedal the brakes stay on forever, I just have to drive and they slowly release.

No idea what's up.

I just changed by back calipers, pads, rotors and I had the lines off obviously. Also when I popped the top off to look at the fluid, inside of the fluid was like a cloud of whiteish stuff. Sort of looks like there is a cloud in the sky, but in my brake fluid...

What's goin on?

if you have to pump the brakes you have air in the system . front brakes locking-up is most likely the flex lines . cloudy fluid means you have moisture in the system . what you need are new flex lines and a good bleeding of the entire system . if you DIY the flex lines are different , lt.and rt. . they are keyed to the brackets for the hard lines . when bleeding start at rt. rear , lt. rear , rt. front then lt. front . i'll bet the car has been setting idle for an extended period . correct ???

Oh yeah, she sat for like 8 months. So you're saying I need to pick up some new flex lines, and bleed her real well. And that should hook her up?

Oh Yeah , in a word YES . if you dont believe me keep on playing with it till you do what i said . the older brake flex lines break down inside and do not allow pressure to bleed off like it should . milkey brake fluid is a no brainer . there have been 30+ veiws to this post and no one but myself has replied , why , because i gave you the correct info. Oh Yeah !!!!!!!

Re: Too odd to explain...

Update:

Fixed the problem today, seems the calipers had gotten seized over the time of sitting. And one of the brake hoses had gone bad, it looked perfectly fine but after removing it it was obviously blocked.

So I bought some new calipers, hoses, and pads for the front. Only $90 for all of it. Bled the system really well, as lots of moisture and air had remained trapped in the master cylinder.

So about 3 hours of work, and $90 and she's back working 100%. If anyone ever finds this thread on a search maybe it'll help them out.

Re: Too odd to explain...

i told you so , us old pharts do know a thing or two about mechnics . glad you got it fixed . now drive and enjoy . to anyone else checking this thread ,
if your brake fluid is milkey or very dark go ahead and bleed/flush the system as i pointed out above . your life could depend could upon it . brake fluid is cheap . your life is not .
