Braking issues
Hey all,
I have a 91 RS disc/drum that has some issues when braking. When I first start the car (and everything is cold), the brakes are so touchy that i barely press them and they lock up (on the rears). Once everything "warms up", the problem goes away. It is especially bad when rolling like through a parking lot when I dont need to press the gas pedal.
Also, I had replaced the rotors not to long ago (a little over a year ago, maybe 8 or 10K) and when braking at high speed (40+), sometimes the steering wheel shakes (slightly to violently, just depends sometimes), and sometimes the whole car itself shakes (as the steering wheel shakes), and then there are also times that nothing happens and it stops like champ.
Any thoughts on what it could be?
Thanks in advance,
-Tim-

Re: Braking issues
Other than the rotors (and probably pads), what have you replaced? With 200K on it, it could be a lot of different things. I suspect leaking wheel cylinders on the rear allowing air into them causing the rears to lock up. I had this same issue in the past on an old truck. I also suspect the front calipers not sliding properly and causing the front to shimmy. I recommend a full disc upgrade or at least a full rebuild front and rear: rotors, calipers, pads, bearings, all flex lines, wheel cylinders and shoes.
