Drum to Disk REAR END SWAP

I have a 1989 IROC-Z with drum brakes with 15” wheels. I found a 1987 IROC disc brake rear end. Can someone tell me what all I will need off the 87 IROC to convert my 89 to disk brakes? Will the two rear ends swap without any real issues? Can someone give me a play by play if this will work?
Thanks

Re: Drum to Disk REAR END SWAP

I'm doing the same thing, except I've got a 82 disc rear going on a 89 car. Your e-brake cables will probably be different, but everything else should bolt up. You'll also need new brake lines on the axle if the "new" one doesn't have them or if they're pretty beat up. I'm going through the hassle of SAE brake lines on the axle to metric on the car, change over was during the 83 model year IIRC.

Re: Drum to Disk REAR END SWAP

I'd pick up the proportioning valve and parking brake cables as well. Your current master cyl is correct. There's a possible idea for the future:

Yeah, I forgot to mention the proportioning valve. I picked one of those up too. Looks like everything else bolts right up.

Re: Drum to Disk REAR END SWAP

You've got the older style cast iron calipers. You should do a search as there's a repair kit that fixes some issues with it, and includes all the normal rebuild stuff. I got mine through GM Parts Direct a few years back for like $45 shipped.

I cleaned it as much as possible by hand, power-washed it, de-greased it, and painted with POR-15. Standing up very well after a three years or so.

Im currently looking at a 1987 IROC disc brake rear end for my 90 Camaro RS.

Would that bolt right up into my 90 RS aswell?

Re: Drum to Disk REAR END SWAP

Should work just the same as mine. I was able to get everything but the car it was on, heck even got the old shocks. Just try and get as much as you can if it is still on the car. Try and get lines cables the whole setup, then you should be good to go. I have not started mine. I am going to replace the engine before I get to the rear end. Then I am going to strip it down and clean it up and paint it before I start the install.
