rotors/drums

Does anyone know the thickness a rotor and drum can be before it's trash.

I can save money and have them turned but I can save myself time if i know when i take them off if they can be turned at all.

Re: rotors/drums

Don't know about the rotors, but the drums should have a max diameter stamped on the outer rim.

Re: rotors/drums

Take them to the machine shop/parts store. They will measure them and let you know if they can be turned.

If the "min thick" isn't cast into the rotor, they have books to tell them that information.

Re: rotors/drums

Stock 3rd gen Camaro, same as 2wd S-10, early Malibu, etc.....965 is discard and .980 is the least it should be machined down to.

There is a way to tell without a micrometer though, if needed in a pinch...Just look at the inner vents, which are just less then half the total thickness of a new rotor and compare the outside, or pad surfaces to each other. They should look like they are about .250 or 1/4 inch(approximately) with the naked eye and have a small 45 degree cut on the outer edges if they have not been turned down excessively yet.

The vents are about .500, the pad friction surfaces are about .270, for a new rotor thickness of 1.040. Varies from manufacturer though, so that is where about comes in....

Re: rotors/drums

I have a pair in the garage I acquired from the junkyard with intentions of turning them down into hubs. One has minimum thickness stamped on the face of the hub, the other is stamped on the back side of the hub. Both indicate 24.28mm.
