Fun w/ a Strange 12bolt & ?rears, Advice?
I am have an 89 Formula, originally a J65 car. I will be swapping out my 10-bolt drums for a 12-bolt Strange w/ rear discs. I have read that the LT1s might work a bit better with my newly upgraded 1LE fronts. FWIW, my tire size is 245/50 16.
I'm short a little information, not for lack of a lengthy search. First, I've read where the LT1s are "basically" the same as the 89 PBRs I have sitting around; however Strange has said these 89s WILL NOT WORK. Can someone please explain the difference that keeps the 89s from not working but makes the LT1s ok? Second, I'll be at the boneyard looking for LT1 rears, does that rear disc setup come on both V6 and V8?
Thank you, that's about all the info I need to get the last piece of this puzzle!

The guy on the phone didn't give me an answer as to why they wouldn't work, he just said they wouldn't I have no idea on the flanges, the axles are 33-spline.
Any idea on if the V6s & V8s both had LT1s?

Strange needs to get their act together.
They don't know crap about these things.
They just ripped me off for a bunch of parts they said I needed to install my brakes....wrong.
If LS1 brakes fit, then they all fit. Some might need a shim but GM doesn't have them anymore. I made my own.

I agree somewhat with you Don. Their website (& Spohn's) says "82-92", I bet they are thinking of the iron caliper ones that suck.
I think I am going to order it w/ the LT1 backing plate (which they say you cannot send them yours, you must pay $100 for theirs) and try to bolt my brakes on. I'm beginning to think mine may work, they are just behind the curve a bit.
Ed, I don't have any bolts for my 89 PBRs, do you sell a bolt kit for these brakes? Also, is there any reason why YOU think I could not use my 89 PBRs with this rear end?
I found one post that said the V6 cars did have the same rear brakes as it's V8 counter parts. It also stated the RPO (beg 1996) was Y87. Not sure is that was true for 93-95 but it's a start.

Re: Fun w/ a Strange 12bolt & ?rears, Advice?
I called Spohn on this and they really didn't know either way.
I called Strange and they said something about my 89 bracket won't bolt to their flange because I have 3 bolts and theirs has 4 bolts, like the LT1. The calipers may well work, they are not the issue, but it's the brackets that holds it all to the flange.
This still doesn't seem too bad. I can get the brackets at the boneyard and use the rest of what I have. I think I'll bring my PBR setup to compare with the V6s just in case.
