Easiest/ cheapest brake options

Ok so ill be putting my C6 wheels on the firebird in the next couple of days and i would really like to upgrade my brakes. I dont have a lot of money, nor tools to do much fabrication. Are there any bolt on applications that upgrade our brakes on the cheap? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

define cheap

any modified spindle upgrade will cost you 500bux plus, if you use second hand calipers.

You can get bolt on 2 piston calipers, but they are something like 400 bux and not worth the effort.

I would change the pads if they are shot and leave the brakes stock. Save your pennies and buy an upgrade when you can afford it.

You can do LS1 brakes up front that wont totally break the bank hehe.

Kits are like 600 bucks or so. If you reuse yoru stock spindles and do the modifications to those yourself, and find the brake parts from a donor car for fairly cheap you can do it for much less than 600. Probly less than half in some cases, depending where you get parts

That cost statement isn't true in my case. I got the new hubs with bearings and caliper relocation brackets for around $120 shipped, a pair of new slotted rotors for $100 shipped, a brand spank'n new LS1 caliper and two used LS1 calipers with EBC yellow stuff brake pads (only ~1k miles) for $100 shipped, 2 disc/disc proportioning valves for free, new braided lines for the complete car for ~$50 shipped, and I had my spindles modified for free by a friend (he's a machinist). After purchasing all that I have since acquired 2 more LS1 calipers for free. I figure that after I sell the 3 calipers and proportioning valve, the whole front brake upgrade will only cost me ~$200. Then again, I did spend around 6 months searching for those deals.

All you have to do is shop around and look for the deals. If you're looking into the LS1 brake upgrade, keep an eye on LS1tech.com. There are usually some really good deals to be had in the "LSX parts for sale" board.

If you don't want the hassle I went through and don't have the cash to purchase the complete kit, I recommend what //<86TA>\\ suggested. Just throw some new pads at your car (and properly bed them in) and you will see a major difference in stopping power. I'm a fan of HAWK HPS for the street and HP+ for the autocrossing I do. I'm looking forward to seeing how well the EBC yellow stuff works. Now I just have to get my butt in gear and install the stuff.

Best of luck,
Mike
