front brakes to the rear?

I have Ed Miller's wilwood brake kit on the front of my car, but i need more stopping power! is there a way to adapt my old front brakes to work on the rear of the car?

Thanks!

Re: front brakes to the rear?

With ALOT of custom fab you could use the front calipers yes but you would have to find a compatable rotor and would have no parking brake. There is absolutely no way to use the front rotors. Just save up for the brake upgrade kit of your choice.

Re: front brakes to the rear?

also why would you want too........ i would much rather have 2 sets of 10in drum brakes, than another set of these gm iron caliper wonders....... these things were designed for S-10s and thats where gm should have left them..... (simply not a big fan of our front brakes i guess.....

Re: front brakes to the rear?

Bill, Ive got Brembo front brakes and wanted more rear stopping power. Look into the LS1/C5 rear brake set up. Its a simple bolt on for a disc brake housing. Ed can supply you with the correct e brake cable. The LS1 rears are 12 inch with a single piston PBR caliper and an internal drum parking brake

I agree with Siegel1719 that it would require some custom fab work but it is doable. The parking brake is the biggest issue to work out but I think I have a way around that. It just requires a lot more ingenuity then most have or want to deal with.

Re: front brakes to the rear?

I have the LS1 brakes on the rear, works great. Almost a bolt on, very little fab work. What the others said about the front calipers. Dean

Re: front brakes to the rear?

Here's a crazy idea and I'm not even sure this would work as I only know the very basics of how they work, but what about putting a line lock on the rear brakes to use for your ebrake?

Entirely possible to do, but the whole point behind a "parking brake" is that is really is an EMERGENCY BRAKE. Purely mechanical in function. Its design purpose was that if your hydraulic brakes go out, you still have a mechanical way of applying some kind of brakes.

Re: front brakes to the rear?

Partly Stephen. The Parking Brake is intended to keep the vehicle parked, even if the system loses hydraulic pressure - so it must be mechanical. Our parking brakes were never intended to be used as emergency brakes, although some may use them that way with varying degrees of success.

Re: front brakes to the rear?

Stephen - I agree that using a line lock would defeat the "emergency" part of the brake's function. I only suggested it: 1 - because I was curious if it would even work since I don't know much about line locks, and 2 - I was thinking in the case of a manual transmission to be used to park the car. I wasn't really thinking of using it as an "emergency" brake, just as a "parking" brake.

3.1EyeCandy - There is no hydraulic brake function when it comes to parking a car. If its a manual transmission, you put the tranny in gear and set the (mechanical) parking brake. If you have an automatic tranny, the tranny is your sole source of holding power. Basically when you put it in "Park" you are setting it in a gear that doesn't move thus holding the car still. The transmission does not use the brakes to hold the car still.
