Brake issues

Ok so my brakes work great most of the time...

Theres a little bit of shimmy to them, but when that starts to happen I just put brake parts cleaner on them and they feel like new.

But when they get wet, thats another story.....

Everytime that the brakes get wet, even with the lightest amount of pressure applied to the brake pedal, the brakes will lock up, and it makes it very hard to stop without completely locking and dragging my wheels to the stop sign.

Its really annoying....

I have a 1990 Camaro RS, with the stock front disc/rear drum brake set up.

My friend who has a 2003 Mustang says that his brakes do the same thing and he has a broken caliper...

Do you think that I have the same problem? I haven't ever taken the wheels off to look at the brakes or anything, nor do I know much about brakes....yet.

Re: Brake issues

Sorry I can't help much but I'll try.
What do you have? Front disc // rear drum or disc?
Are the rotors new // turned, or were they ok & you changed pads // shoes?

Reason I ask such 101 Qs-- another car we have needed brake work. I had the rotors checked & they were out of shape just enough to cause pedal pulse & to pull slightly. During disassembly, I also found out a front caliper wasn't "sliding" as it should.
I cleaned the new rotors with clean shop towels & brake cleaner to remove possible contaminents from the rotors.

New caliper, pads, rotors & bled the system & no probs.
After a check to make sure all was good, I went for a drive--
Out on an empty road, I would go 40, brake hard. Go backwards a few feet, brake hard. Go 55, brake hard.
This is what I did. IDK if it would work on a 3rd gen. I've had no issues for almost 8 months now.

I'm sure you'll get technical & more to the point help. This was my latest experience doing a brake job.
I'll follow the thread to learn also.
Good luck & be safe!!

Re: Brake issues

I haven't done anything to the brakes, and I have reason to believe that they are original to the car, I have all the paperwork that ever dealt with the car, and theres nothing in there about a brake job.

They work fine and can stop me when I need to, but sometimes when they're wet they work too good, haha.

Anyone else have any ideas?

I'd say, if the brakes are 20 years old and have never been serviced in any way, you'd better jerk the wheels and do some investigating. Brake cleaner isn't a fix.

I'd think that wheel bearing, pads, calipers, rotors, fluid, and even brake lines would be in order. I wouldn't neglect the drums either.
