best brake upgrade under $1000

Hey guys, trying to plan out my brake buildup. I've budgeted $1000 for everything. Just wondering what kind of budget brake conversion are out there. I know people have switched to ls1 brakes etc... I want something that is easy to install and will provide the best braking possible. Don't know if it matters, but I'm gonna be running 18" wheels. Thanks for the help.

Re: best brake upgrade under $1000

Are you looking for front brakes, rear brakes, or both? I have a 4 piston wilwood setup in the back. I have no complaints about it, other than they just touch 15" draglites. But if your running 18's, then that wont matter. I like that the parking brake is an internal drum so the caliper looks cleaner. I have an adjustable proportioning valve on the rear and I have to turn the pressure way down or they easily overpower my front brakes.

I'm going to say LS1 brakes then are an excellent upgrade.

I just picked up the rotors, calipers, pads, and lines for $125 shipped for the fronts. I need to turn down a stock rotor, modify the spindle, and buy the abutment brackets from Ed. I already replaced my 9bolt with one out of a 02 LS1 3.23s.

Not to hijack, but will the LS1 front brakes fit under 15" rims?

I haven't done it yet, and it was never a consideration so I don't know for sure. But my guess is no. I'd search the boards, the answer will be there.

Why are you interested in rears too? Spending $1000 on front brakes will get you a lot further than spending $1000 on front and rears.

I have a 14'' with cts-v brembo calipers

calipers, loaded, shipped -400 usd -ebay
rotors -68 per piece+ shipping from GMPD
brackets you can get under 100 i gues,
spindles and hubs- you can modify by yourself if not i belive less than 200 inc spindles
new brake lines?- no idea i have used my old C4 lines

if you know a metal shop you can do all kit for less than 900 usd

So you're actually suggesting to have disproportioned brakes?

I would never suggest upgrading the front and not the back brakes.

The answer to that is no, I'm afraid. They require a 16" rim

You can fit C4 brakes (Not the HD version) under 15" rims though

Its only disproportioned if you don't do something about it. Have you ever driven an '84-'88 4 wheel disc car? They are incredibly disproportioned from the factory. I run an adjustable valve to set the bias.

I have raced on open road courses with upgraded front brakes and stock rear '87 discs. The rear discs work great lap after lap. Even turn 2 at Evergreen slowing down from 135-60 in a 3500lb car lap after lap. I don't see any reason to upgrade rear brakes except for looks.

I'm curious to hear your reasons for suggesting a rear upgrade.
