Thread: 91 Camaro Clutch Master Cylinder/Brake Booster Removal??
I am having a very hard time removing my clutch master cylinder from my car. I have removed the slave, unbolted the two bolts under the dash on the fire wall and removed the reservoire. I can not get the U bolt to pull through the holes in the firewall (think it is rusted). I would like to remove the brake booster to have better access to the clutch master but I have never removed one before can anyone tell me how?

Hey Dragn, try using a long drift punch to coax the u-bolt out, screw the nut's back on just enough to protect the threads, and just giv-em a good whack with a mallet or hammer. Mine was stuck also, but it will give, without having to remove the brake booster.

Thanks ill give it another shot I have hit it with a hammer a few times with no luck but I wasnt really pouding on it lol. Thanks for the tips ill put the nut back on and try to break it loose.
Would you know if I can just replace the hose (since its the only problem) or do I have to get a new master and slave?

Which hose/line? The one to the resevior, or the slave? If its the one for the res. stop NOW. There is no reason to remove the master cyl. If its the slave line, then yes the master cyl. needs to be removed becauce of the small drift pin that needs to be removed and reinstalled.

Re: Thread: 91 Camaro Clutch Master Cylinder/Brake Booster Removal??
Well, I've done it both way's. Once when the motor was out, I installed the line your changing now, then after the motor was installed I had to replace the whole master cyl. and res. There is one thing I noticed, the u-bolt isn't a perfect "U" shape. It was kind of a "closed" U, which made it "hang up" a little passing through the firewall.

Re: Thread: 91 Camaro Clutch Master Cylinder/Brake Booster Removal??
Finally its free but it sure was not easy:[ Now I have to wait till my new hose comes in the mail. I got a DEI heat sheath for the new line to keep it from melting again. Thanks for the help is there anything I should know before I install the new line and put everything back together? How do I bleed the slave what should I watch for ect?

Re: Thread: 91 Camaro Clutch Master Cylinder/Brake Booster Removal??
Well I guess I should've mentioned that I believe Mcleod makes that line in a steel braided version, no need for the heat shield. As for bleeding, bench bleed the cylinder first,( submerg the line connected to the cyl into a container of brake fluid and pump until it flows fluid freely, no spitting of air)then install the cylinder, then the line, connect line to the slave, but dont connect to the fork yet, fill the resv with fluid then pump the pedal untill the slave extends and retracts completly and smoothly, this should only take a few pump as there is no return line. Then install the slave. Done.

Wow you make it sound pretty simple stupid question since I am new to this repair but what is the best way to put the master cylinder back in should I feed it up from the bottom or reach over the fender and try to line it up that way. I might be working on this by myself so any tips help thanks.

Re: Thread: 91 Camaro Clutch Master Cylinder/Brake Booster Removal??
Well, if you do it from the bottom you probaly can't see it, so do it from the top over the fender. If you need to use a piece of safety wire and feed it through the firewall/cyl mount holes just to hold it in place long enough for you to go around and nut it. I kinda figured that as hard as it was to remove, that it would be a little stiff going back in, making it easier to nut.

Re: Thread: 91 Camaro Clutch Master Cylinder/Brake Booster Removal??
Well I finally got this PIA job done thanks for all the help and advice btw putting that U bolt back on by yourself is impossible get a friend with tiny hands. I took the car out for a test drive no gear grinding everything seemed to be working fine...then the car gods kicked me in the ***** and the plastic clip that holds the rod on the clutch pedal coming from the clutch master broke so I had no clutch and had to limp my car home in first gear. I am going to try and use a few C-clips to hold it on the pedal do you think that will work any suggestions are appreciated.

Re: Thread: 91 Camaro Clutch Master Cylinder/Brake Booster Removal??
Just buy a replacement, no sense in spending anymore time on trying to make something work, plus that part isnt to hard to find. If you have any problems finding it let me know, i'll find one.

Re: Thread: 91 Camaro Clutch Master Cylinder/Brake Booster Removal??
K sounds good just wish the factory piece was not plastic...I can only get this part from a GM dealer and they have to order it from the U.S. it costs $17.00 cnd and will take 10 days to come. If you can get me one that would be great but don't go out of your way you have already helped me quite bit. The wreckers here won't sell just the bushing so I can't even scavenge one. Any help appreciated thanks again.
