G92 Rear brake noise - what pads

Hi to everyone ! I used search but didnt find another thread with the same issues.

The car : 87 iroc-z TPI 5 speed with G92 (9-bolt) rear end, disc brakes.

The issue : At low speeds i can hear a sound coming from what i assume to be the brakes. The sound is definitly going according to the speed which i go and i can only hear it when at low speed. I have no reason to believe that the sound goes away at high speed, but i probably can't hear it due to the other sounds. As soon as i apply pressure to the brakes the sound goes away and the brakes operate smoothly and correctly.

There is no way for me to describe precisly the sound but it could be written as : CL-CLICK - CL-CLICK over and over again.

Recent jobs done on the car : i'va had the rear pads and rotors changed by a shop around here. The sound was there prior to the change and has gone away for about 200-300 km but came back jus as strong as ever.

What i think might be the problem : maybe the shop ordered the wrong pads and they are loose in the caliper and are moving around a little bit or something like that. I inspected them and they didn't SEEM to be loose but my hand vs. the weight of the car doesn't compare.

My questions to you all : Do you see anything else that could be the culprit ? If the pads are indeed the wrong ones for the G92 package, which would be the good ones (i have a NAPA near me, i'm in canada)

Thanks to everyone !

Re: G92 Rear brake noise - what pads

for an application like this, pads either fit or they dont, no "kinda" here luckily. i always put anti-squeal on the back of the pads to stop metal on metal noises, may help the cause and pretty simple to do without a lot of work. the old iron calipers were issue-prone, not everyone's favorite design. if they're stuck, it may be worthwhile to get some rebuilts thrown on, but the mechanic should have noticed this at the time of replacement

IIRC, G92 is simply a performance rear axle, which included discs in the package. The calipers and rotors, however, would be the same as other cars of that year.

Re: G92 Rear brake noise - what pads

Thank you two for your replies, sorry if i don't have much experience, but let me ask the following two questions :

- What is that "anti-squeal" you speak of ? Would it be a grease of some kind or maybe heat-resistant packing ?
- If i'm to buy brake pads and calipers, simply asking for 87 hardware should do fine ?

Again thank you very much, i thought that my mechanic would have told me if he found anything suspicious but then again the noise wasn't there for the first 200km folowing the new pads and rotors. I will be checking to change the calipers or at least try that anti-squeal.

You might Google 'anti squeal' for more info. Any auto parts store should carry some version, as it's common.

Purchase rotors/pads for an 87 (non-performance or non-1LE) and you'll have what you need.
