front LS1 brake upgrade issues
Hi there,
I've done a fair bit of searching, but I can't see to find any posts with issues the same as I'm seeing.
Currently putting a set of LS1 brakes on my 87 IROC. I've purchased modified hubs and brackets from bigbrakeupgrade.com and modified my own spindles. I got a set of calipers, caliper carriers and hardware from an 00 Z28. I've got everything more or less bolted together, but when I look at the caliper carriers are positioned over the brake rotor, the carriers are not centered over rotor. The back of the bracket is very close to touching the back of the rotor. Now, when modified the spindle I tapped it to use 12mm bolts. In order for the carrier to clear the 12mm hex head bolt at the bottom of the spindle, I had to put washers between the adapter bracket and the carrier. This ends up pushing the carrier toward the rotor. If I take the bottom 12mm hex bolt out of the spindle and take the carrier and position it on the adapter bracket, the carrier is positioned much better over the rotor. I haven't tried to mount the brake caliper yet to see how it fits as I wasn't real comfortable with way everything looks.
So what I would like to know are 2 things. What are most people using in the bottom adapter to spindle bolt location other than a standard hex head bolt? Also does the caliper carrier need to be perfectly centered over the rotor, or can it be offset a little on either side? If needed I can get pics of the setup tonight when I get home.
Thanks in advance,
Kevin

You need shims to center the caliper carrier over the rotor the best you can. You may need to grind the spindle more for bolt clearance or use a allen headed bolt.

Thanks for the info. I've called a couple of local fastener places and I'm going to pick up some low profile hex head type cap screws and try that.
