Rear Disc Upgrade ?

Existing 1988 GTA stock rear brake system with cast iron calipers etc.

My question:
What is necessary to upgrade to the 1LE set up on a rear axle? Parts houses stock the calipers, rotors and pads for this upgrade but what about the other items I may need.

Mounting bracket?
Hard lines?
Brake hoses?
Parking Brake cables?

Of course I'll need calipers, rotors and pads but what about the above items. I'm also trying to get a grip on the cost and time factors.
Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Don't forget the combination valve.

Re: Rear Disc Upgrade ?

You can always find a rear disc 93-97 V8 Firebird or Camaro in the salvage yard and get the backing plates and calipers and carriers etc and swap them onto your axle. You would have to jack the rear of that car up to pull the axles to get the backing plates off. This would give you everything but the e brake cables and hard lines etc for your axle. You might be able to reuse some of your old steel brake lines.
I would reccomend new flex lines over any used ones.

Re: Rear Disc Upgrade ?

I would recommend doing an adjustable prop valve if you like being able to adjust the brakes so the front and rear work perfect. The stock valves seem to leave alot to be desired.

Re: Rear Disc Upgrade ?

I think that the advice you've been given so far (beyond JamesC link which seems to be nothing more that putting 89+ factory brakes on) is based on people forgetting one thing.....That you have a 9-bolt not a 10-bolt. Which means simply putting on bigger brakes is not as simple as just bolting them on from another car. AFAIK, there are no bigger brake options for a 9-bolt beyond the factory 89+ disc brakes with the aluminum PBR calipers.

There are other options. FlynBye makes a kit to install 2010+ SS calipers on a 9 bolt. However you lose the e-brake. I have designed a bracket to incorporate the e-brake.

Do you know if there is another company that makes this conversion bracket. Flynbye has shut down their cart & I called but cant get in touch with Ed.
