Hi Guys, i have the usual problem with the handbrake. The rear calipers have been rebuilt and are working correctly, the problem is, in New Zealand where I live, we have 6 monthly vehicle checks and they are very hot on hand brakes. In NZ they are supposed to be emergency brakes rather than a parking brake.

Summit only seem to list a Cardone re-manufactured caliper with a handbrake for my car. Has anyone used these, are they any good?

My other option is to substitute a better caliper from a different car/model. What calipers with handbrake will fit without modification (they frown on that as well)? I have 18" rims.

Thanks for any help on this, living here doesn't give me a lot of options, i.e. there aren't a lot of wrecked cars to get parts off.

 

Have you considered the rear disc setup from the 98-02 4th gens? They have an integral drum parking brake in the rotor hat. Assuming you have a 10 bolt rear, these will bolt right up. I did this to my 89 (I had a disc setup from an 83 Trans Am). My park brake is 4th gen from the handle all the way to the wheels.

I have now. That will work but getting the parts will not be easy, what I really need is just a straight caliper swap. There aren't many wrecked 4th gens around here.

FWIW, I had the work of pulling them done for me and bought the whole kit from e-Bay. It came with the lines and rear cables, then I pulled the forward cable, bracket and handle and handle from a 4th gen bird.

Mine were used and still quite dirty when I got them, Ed Miller's will be clean and new. Mine were quite a bit less, but more work to install.
