Question about gen 1 CTSv brakes with Z51 rotor

I had some brackets made up for the conversion per Pocket's thread from a year ago (thank you for posting your bracket design). Everything lines up nicely except I need to have about 1/2" worth of spacers due to one of the bracket-to-strut bolts interfering with the caliper.

ebmiller's thread from a few years back references needing a spacer for this swap, too.

Is that too much space and thus mess up my caliper to rotor alignment? That is what I am most worried about.

Thank you
Chuck

Chuck,

Unfortunately, this swap is a non-starter. The CTS-V pad height is taller than the annulus of the rotor. This is true of any of the C5/C6 rotors. The pad will overhang the rotor by ~3/8" IIRC. What do you plan to do about that?

I can't believe people keep thinking this is going to fit. Maybe we need a sticky on this at some point. I have seen many people waste a ton of money just to realize this later.

Overlooking that issue...

How thick is that bracket? It looks thin. Maybe to thin?

Finally, yes the bolt head is an issue. I have decided to reverse the direction of the lower bracket to spindle bolt, then drill out the spindle, machine a flat for the bolt head and tap the bracket. If the bracket was designed to be a certain thickness, then all the sudden you add 1/2", then yes, that is going to blow your alignment.

Which hubs are you planning to use? OEM offset or 1LE?

John

John, thanks for the reply.

Luckily I only have about $2 in hardware on this thing and already had the calipers, so if it doesnt work out I didnt spend a ton of money. Had a friend make me the brackets.

There were two threads where folks said they got it to work, Dewey316 (post 258) & Stevo (post 250) a few years back with ebmiller parts (post 207 and 239 for pics):
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/brak...er-swap-6.html

Unfortunately it looks like Dewey's pictures are no longer working and I didnt save them.

Then Pocket more recently:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/brak...pers-17-a.html

ebmillers looks like he uses a significantly smaller bolt head and about 1/4" spacers. Pocket said the pad surface fits the rotor fine, but I thought I read what you did about having a bit of overhang.

Bracket was supposed to be 3/8", but I didnt mic it yet so you may be right. Was planning on using OEM offset.

Yes I am aware of those threads. But I have personally tried this combination, it doesn't work. I guess you could "not notice" the overhang, and continue on with life, but that is not my idea of a job well done.

Maybe I need to get on those threads.

Well I can tell you that if you use the Camaro SS rotor, you will need to use the 1LE offset to get a thick enough bracket.

Thanks for all the info. I have a note out to hawks to see if there's anything else out there that fits the caliper off say a EVO or STI that's just a bit smaller. If I cant do that then I'll take your suggestion and punt and find some 18s to run with a standard bracket.

Your a talking about an alternative rotor?

EVO / STI may work but they use smaller calipers.

C4HD rotor might work, would need to measure. Either way you would likely need to run the 1LE offset.
