Rear brakes disconnected.

Was only using this car for my work commute (1 miles each way) with front brakes, and before trading for this car I knew the rear brakes were disconnected.

However, me and my buddy decided to tackle this problem since the weather is warm finally. Once removing the rear wheels we ran into a problem.

Everything looks connected, but when depressing the brake pedal nothing happens.

Any ideas? Sure would like to finish this in the next few weeks.

Thanks!

Yes, we definitely need more infomation. You "knew" what was disconnected? Is this rear drum or rear disc?

Re: Rear brakes disconnected.

I really wish there was more information. The guy I traded for it was an older co-worker, and he never looked into it. Someone owed him some money and that was his only way paying off his debt.

I am going to goof around with it some more this after noon.

So lets try this - someone is wonder how they could easily disconnect the rear brakes without messing with the hardware in the rear end.

Perhaps this may help reverse what every they chose to do with this car.

Re: Rear brakes disconnected.

They could of simply pinched off the line, vise grips or hammer a flat spot in the steel line.

Re: Rear brakes disconnected.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't these cars have a proportioning valve that could get stuck and block off 2 of the brakes?

Re: Rear brakes disconnected.

Update: Went back out to replace my steering wheel and decided to check back over everything again.

We tried to bleed the rear brakes and there was no fluid.

My buddy will be down from Anchorage in two weeks, and his fathers friend has a shop with a lift. Perhaps this may get put off till then.

Re: Rear brakes disconnected.

OK, so no fluid comes out the bleeders. That's a hint.

Check the rubber line at the center of the pumpkin. Specifically, see if there's something like a roofing nail where the steel line connects to it. If not, just replace it; it's probably blocked inside, that being how those usually fail. They start out with a very small hole in the fittings where the rubber plugs onto the ends; over time, since brake fluid draws in moisture due to its chemical properties, the fittings rusts on the inside; and eventually the hole gets blocked by the rust. But, not to worry, that hose is like $12, so it's NBD.

Then, if that one is fornicated, then since the 2 front ones are built in THE EXACT SAME way using THE EXACT SAME materials and have been immersed in THE EXACT SAME fluid with THE EXACT SAME contamination under the EXACT SAME conditions for THE EXACT SAME length of time, they are probably in ____ _______ ____ condition. (you're a smart guy, I'll let you fill in the blanks) So change those out too because they're about to do ____ _______ ____ thing.
