Rear brake noise when turning (Disc)

1987 Firebird 5.7 liter tune port fuel injection
700R4 transmission.
10 bolt rear 26 spline axles Auburn 3.43 gears 7.5 inch.

I have recently swapped in a 10 bolt disc brake set up out of an 88 Camaro. New calipers, brake pads and rotors. When the brakes are warmed up and I come to a stop and make some sort of honing noise. Not a squeak but like a sinking ship type noise haha. And vibrates the car a little bit. Also when I make a right turn without pressing on the brake it makes the same noise going around the turn sometimes pressing the brake relieves a sound sometimes it makes it louder. I know my axles are good. Have tried adjusting the emergency brake cable and it works okay but the noise is still there. Any help would be appreciated

By chance did you change the rear diff fluid?

to be brake related because i can replicate the noise at a crawl as i found out just a bit ago.

Re: Rear brake noise when turning (Disc)

You may have 2 issues going on.
I'm assuming its a posi. Did you put the GM additive in the fluid? Aftermarket stuff doesn't work as well. That helps the clutches in the diff stop moaning and groaning. They will make a weird brake like noise, esp when turning.

If there is still a noise and think its pad related, jack it up, set rear on stands, run it to see which side is doing it. May have to remove the calipers/pads to locate that problem.

Re: Rear brake noise when turning (Disc)

The noise you are hearing while turning is the rotor rubbing on the caliper bracket. Check to see if the rotor is perfectly centered in the bracket and adjust with thin washers between the bracket and the axle mount if it's not. The axles move in and out as you turn due to the c-clip axle retention design. You could also have worn c-clips that are letting the axles move more and making the problem worse.

Re: Rear brake noise when turning (Disc)

Thanks 91 I will look into that. I have to change the pinion seal and do some other things so I'm going to change the c clips. Anyways I've gotten rid of except for rare occasions now. The problem was as the metal brake line was pulling on the caliper and I believe this was causing thecaliber to tweak as it was being used. I bent the line in a position to where it wasn't so much a problem. The noise does occur occasionally from time to time but it's nowhere near as bad. I'm also going to be buying a dial indicator so that I could determine the In and out play on the axles.
