Drum to disc conversion

i am swapping a drum brake out of a 91 firebird and replacing it with a disc setup from sn 87 camaro. My question is if thr emergency brake lines are the same or do i need the ones from the camaro?

Re: Drum to disc conversion

Don't do it. Not worth the trouble. Delco Moraine discs don't work as well as the drums.

Just off the top of my head, the cast iron rear calipers used a different master, prop valve, lines, and cables than the drums. Also the E-brake is self adjusting on the 91, and manual on the 87. Not sure what all problems you'll run into, but considering the cast iron caliper disc setup is garbage right from the factory, it's really not even worth considering.

This is not my car. I am being paid to do this conversion. The customer gets what the customer wants and pays for.

Ebrake lines need to be swapped out for ones from a disc rear. Preferably, an early 91 model year car with disc. You can find everything you need for this swap at www.flynbye.com.

I just swapped out the drums on my 91 for a disc setup with 13" rotors. I bought my cables from Ed from the above site and they worked perfect.

I will add that I used PBR calipers from a 1992 camaro and custom brackets from Ed as well. I was able to keep the original rearend and just do the conversion. No drilling or cutting other. It was a 100% bolt on swap.

As for the proportioning valve, I replaced the spring inside the original valve on the car. Took me 5 minutes to change. There is no need to swap out the entire valve. There is a huge thread on here about the spring upgrade. My car has 14" rotors up front and 13" rotors out back. It stops too good now.

Re: Drum to disc conversion

Get the E-Brake cables from the Camaro. Drum cables and Disk cables are different.

There's info on thirdgen braking systems (and conversions) in the following link that may be helpful.

Re: Drum to disc conversion

She is all converted. Was a simple swap. Had to change out the ebrake handle and cables for the adjustable cables on the 87. Bought all new calipers, rotors, and lines from rockauto. And new Founders trailing arms. Buying everything new is the way to go.

Re: Drum to disc conversion

No aftermarket valve will.fit without modifying the lines. You need to use a factory valve from a similar year disc/disc car.
